Summary

"Leadership should mean giving control rather than taking control and creating leaders rather than forging followers。" David Marquet, an experienced Navy officer, was used to giving orders。 As newly appointed captain of the USS Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine, he was responsible for more than a hundred sailors, deep in the sea。 In this high-stress environment, where there is no margin for error, it was crucial his men did their job and did it well。

But the ship was dogged by poor morale, poor performance, and the worst retention in the fleet。 Marquet acted like any other captain until, one day, he unknowingly gave an impossible order, and his crew tried to follow it anyway。 When he asked why the order wasn't challenged, the answer was "Because you told me to。" Marquet realized he was leading in a culture of followers, and they were all in danger unless they fundamentally changed the way they did things。 That's when Marquet took matters into his own hands and pushed for leadership at every level。

Turn the Ship Around! is the true story of how the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet by challenging the U。S。 Navy's traditional leader-follower approach。 Struggling against his own instincts to take control, he instead achieved the vastly more powerful model of giving control。 Before long, each member of Marquet's crew became a leader and assumed responsibility for everything he did, from clerical tasks to crucial combat decisions。 The crew became fully engaged, contributing their full intellectual capacity every day, and the Santa Fe started winning awards and promoting a highly disproportionate number of officers to submarine command。

No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet's radical guidelines to turn your own ship around。 The payoff: a workplace where everyone around you is taking responsibility for their actions, where people are healthier and happier, where everyone is a leader。

I want Marquet as my leader! Enough with the traditional hierarchical leadership model where the person at the top has to shoulder the entire decision-making。 Bossy leaders are not required to effectively run an organization。 Employee happiness will benefit from a leader who doesn't bark orders。 Marquet teaches leadership is an enabling art。 A sound leader can release the potential of the people they lead。 Thank you Simon Sinek for referencing this book I likely would have missed out on these re I want Marquet as my leader! This is easily one of the best leadership book。 I liked the leader-leader concepts described in this book。 Each chapter is concise and carries a very practical suggestion to learn and adapt in day-to-day practices。

The field I work in is no where close to a military organization, however so many of the practices in this book are applicable for fostering good delegation and leadership in your teams。 I hope using these will continue to inspire all employees at my work to take ownership of the success of the whole org。 Highly recommend。 Now on to practicing these things in real life!

Great book on how to build autonomy in a hierarchical organization。 It still have control through the hierarchy but can use some of the agency of a decentralized organization。Some points。1: delegate authority and train for that responsibility2: speak out actions, I intend to。 。 instead of requesting or waiting for orders3: focus on purpose over process。

In the past, the only management book I've been able to recommend was Deming's "Out of the Crisis"。 I now have a second management book that I think is worth reading。 This book is a wonderful lesson in the values of autonomy and alignment。 In the past, the only management book I've been able to recommend was Deming's "Out of the Crisis"。 I now have a second management book that I think is worth reading。 This book is a wonderful lesson in the values of autonomy and alignment。 。。。more

This was a combination of an entertaining look inside the operations of a nuclear submarine and a leadership manual。 I took away a lot of ideas to work on my own leadership skills。 One of the best leadership books I've read。 This was a combination of an entertaining look inside the operations of a nuclear submarine and a leadership manual。 I took away a lot of ideas to work on my own leadership skills。 One of the best leadership books I've read。 。。。more

This is one of the best books on leadership that I have read in a long time。 It's got clear, pithy principles, but they are backed by lots of specific examples and lots of real world testing。 The principles were named after the fact, not made up first and then examples sought out to justify them。 And these principles were tested in one of the most demanding environments I can imagine, a US Navy Submarine, rife with bureaucracy and severe limits to the working space。Some of these principles: -Ach This is one of the best books on leadership that I have read in a long time。 It's got clear, pithy principles, but they are backed by lots of specific examples and lots of real world testing。 The principles were named after the fact, not made up first and then examples sought out to justify them。 And these principles were tested in one of the most demanding environments I can imagine, a US Navy Submarine, rife with bureaucracy and severe limits to the working space。Some of these principles: -Achieve excellence, don't just avoid errors-Use "I intend to" as a way to give ownership to your people without top leaders losing the chance to speak into a bad choice -Think out loud with each other (share why you're doing what you're doing) to train leadership thinking and avoid miscommunication-Act your way into the new culture (do it first, then they will feel it)-Embrace the inspectors as a chance to learn and grow (not resist or resent them)-Begin with the end in mind, overall and for each individual, set vivid goals stating "how will you know when you've been successful"I could go on, but I think it's clear。 This is worth reading by all leaders。 。。。more

Turn the ship around should be THE reference book for any organisation regardless of the level。 I would give a 7 star to this book if I could。 Candid, short and objective narrative as we would expect from any submarine captain。 This book is not a recipe book but a story that happened with the USS Santa Fe - a demoralised crew and ineffective warship - by transforming it into the navy's reference。 Very pleasuring read and mandatory to any senior and management team。 Turn the ship around should be THE reference book for any organisation regardless of the level。 I would give a 7 star to this book if I could。 Candid, short and objective narrative as we would expect from any submarine captain。 This book is not a recipe book but a story that happened with the USS Santa Fe - a demoralised crew and ineffective warship - by transforming it into the navy's reference。 Very pleasuring read and mandatory to any senior and management team。 。。。more

I thought there were good principles in this book to follow, however some of the military terms and stories became overwhelming at points。

I read this book one a recommendation, but I found it tiresome despite some interesting inside baseball about life about a Navy nuclear submarine。 Mr。 Marquet's bottom line is: don't micromanage your people, it hobbles performance and stunts leadership growth。 Fair enough。 However, Mr。 Marquet dresses his premise up in overly complex terms (be a leader-leader, not a leader-follower) in an attempt to be novel, distracting from the truth of his main point (don't micro manage)。 Weak recommend。 I read this book one a recommendation, but I found it tiresome despite some interesting inside baseball about life about a Navy nuclear submarine。 Mr。 Marquet's bottom line is: don't micromanage your people, it hobbles performance and stunts leadership growth。 Fair enough。 However, Mr。 Marquet dresses his premise up in overly complex terms (be a leader-leader, not a leader-follower) in an attempt to be novel, distracting from the truth of his main point (don't micro manage)。 Weak recommend。 。。。more

A good book club reading。 I enjoyed learning all the different mechanisms for implementing a leader-leader company/organization structure。 Many of them are easy to do and I hope I can remember them for future situations。 An interesting part of the book is the Naval submarine side, where the author explains his implementation of the leader-leader structure in a submarine setting。

Great guide on transitioning from a leader-follower to a leader-leader systemThis book is very well written for a new leader who may be wondering how to set the culture in their organisation。 No complex jargon, and lots of helpful thought-exercises and tips make this a great read。

While it was a bit technical at times, there were many great lessons to be learned about leadership and how we work。 I will continue to strive to implement some of these ideas in my work and encourage my leaders to consider the same。

This book was more about examples and detail of what he did but did have enough conversation on how to apply it in a different setting。 I like the concepts and ideas。 Glad it was a shorter listen。 Only around 6 hours。 If it was longer it wouldn't have been as good。 This book was more about examples and detail of what he did but did have enough conversation on how to apply it in a different setting。 I like the concepts and ideas。 Glad it was a shorter listen。 Only around 6 hours。 If it was longer it wouldn't have been as good。 。。。more
